When it comes to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, there are plenty of villains who are vying for attention. From Loki to Thanos, the canon is stuffed with baddies looking to take down the Avengers. One such adversary was none other than Crossbones who was brought to life by Frank Grillo. The character, who debuted in Captain America: Winter Soldier, last appeared in Captain America: Civil War – but could fans see him reappear?

Well, if you ask Grillo about those odds, they don’t look good.

In a recent interview with Collider, Grillo opened up about his work with the MCU and hinted that he might have turned down a chance to reprise his role as Crossbones.

“I think I’m done,” Grillo said, first referring to his work with the Purge franchise.

“Same thing with Captain America. There’s nowhere for it to go, unless you’re Captain America or Iron Man. They were talking about it, but I was like, ‘You know what? I’d just rather not do it.’ I’m so appreciative and grateful to have been a part of something that big.”

Of course, Grillo’s words are a bit different from those fans have heard in the past. Backin July, the actor hinted that Crossbones may not be done with the MCU. While fans were led to think the villain died in Captain America: Civil War, Grillo had other ideas about his character’s survival. Speaking with ABC News, the actor said, “You think he dies, don’t you? Did you see the body?” Smiling, Grillo later asked, “What did you see?”

The actor even referenced Crossbone’s uncanny knack for survival, saying, “That happened last time. I’m not saying anything except that…you didn’t see a body.”

Surely, fans will be sad to see the villain depart from the MCU, but there is always a chance that Grillo is throwing out a red-herring. In the past, the actor has gushed over the character and hinted that he has some unfinished business with both Captain America and the Winter Soldier.

Speaking with ComicBook.com, Grillo said that revenge is what keeps Crossbones going, and he still have no finished that mission. “I think revenge is a big part of… Whatever Rumlow was feeling as far as being torn between which side he should be on, which I think he was, is gone now. I think he’s out for one thing and one thing only and that’s to revenge what’s happened to him,” he explained.
