A pair of new television spots released online for Logan, confirming one of the rumors surrounding the film’s mutant population and giving a better look at one of the villain’s capabilities.

The first spot, titled the Wolverine, shows Boyd Holbrook’s character Donald Pierce call Logan by his code name.
He refers to X-23 as “R&D gone wrong,” and also shows off his cybernetic enhancements. This version of Pierce and his crew may or may not be referred to as Reavers in the film, but it’s pretty clear where the inspiration for them derives from.
The next spot, called Mutant, shows some previously seen footage while Hugh Jackman‘s Logan and Patrick Stewart’s Charles Xavier provide a voiceover.
“This is the mutant I told you about,” Xavier says, referring to X-23.
“Charles, there hasn’t been a new one born in 25 years.”
This point has been hinted at in promos, leaks, and news releases surrounding the film but has yet to be confirmed so bluntly in any of the official material. And now that we know the mutant population has been decimated, the fact begs another question.
Specifically, what happened to get rid of the mutants? An M-Day level event, a la Scarlet Witch in House of M? Or does it have something to do with the dastardly Essex Corporation, hinted at the end of X-Men: Apocalypse?
We’ll likely find out more when Logan releases next month. Are you excited to learn the reason why the mutants are gone? Let us know with your own Anticipation Ranking!

In 2024 the mutant population has shrunk significantly and the X-Men have disbanded. Logan, whose power to self-heal is dwindling, has surrendered himself to alcohol and now earns a living as a chauffeur. He takes care of the ailing old Professor X whom he keeps hidden away. One day, a female stranger asks Logan to drive a girl named Laura to the Canadian border. At first he refuses, but the Professor has been waiting for a long time for her to appear. Laura possesses an extraordinary fighting prowess and is in many ways like Wolverine.
She is pursued by sinister figures working for a powerful corporation; this is because her DNA contains the secret that connects her to Logan. A relentless pursuit begins โฆ In this third cinematic outing featuring the Marvel comic book character Wolverine we see the superheroes beset by everyday problems. They are ageing, ailing and struggling to survive financially. A decrepit Logan is forced to ask himself if he can or even wants to put his remaining powers to good use. It would appear that in the near-future, the times in which they were able put the world to rights with razor sharp claws and telepathic powers are now over.
