One of the big set piece scenes in Spider-Man: Homecoming is the Staten Island Ferry scene, but you might be surprised at how “real” the whole thing is.
As seen in the trailers, Spider-Man is shown attempting to keep the Ferry from splitting directly in half. Director Jon Watts was asked how they put the impressive scene on the screen, and it wasn’t as CG as you might think.

“We used a combination of a big set in Atlanta we built that could rip in half,” said Watts. “The actual ferry in New York City. They were amazingly gracious to let us shoot on the proper ferry, and to put that all together, I feel bad that we did so much damage to it.”
It helps the scene retain some believability, giving everything a real feeling of weight. That’s the advantage that practical effects will always have on CGI, despite the insane advances visual effects have made.
Next up for Sony is Spider-Man: Homecoming, which currently has a 4.14 out of 5 on ComicBook.com’s anticipation rankings, and you can view the full description below.
