Spider-Man: Homecoming is set to swing into theaters next month, with the character making a huge splash in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after debuting in Captain America: Civil War.
The latest take on the Webslinger is incorporating a ton of changes that fans of previous movies won't be used to seeing. And with the casting of Zendaya as the mysterious Michelle, fans considered that name could be Marvel and Sony's attempt to misdirect fans—why else would the filmmakers be playing so coy about the character? Could Zendaya actually be playing Mary Jane?
The recently released junior novelization of the movie has the answer, and it's a pretty big spoiler for some major developments that will rock Spider-Man's world in his latest big screen adventure.
As revealed in the book, the full name of Zendaya's character is Michelle Toomes. As in, related to Adrian Toomes. As in, the Vulture.
Trailers have yet to reveal any shared scenes with Michael Keaton and Zendaya, but we can expect that relationship to be explored in the film. It makes sense that Marvel and Sony would try to hide this development in the marketing and promotional material, especially if Michelle is going to play a big part in the film's plot.
Vulture has already been established as a blue-collar worker struggling to make ends meet in life, further exacerbated by Tony Stark's Department of Damage Control taking over a business opportunity that he once relied on. So he turns to trading alien artifacts on the black market.
Now we'll get more motivation into his turn to villainy, likely to help his daughter who has shown potential to have an important future ahead of her.
Family values and relationships have played a key role in the Spider-Man mythos, so it's great to see that being applied to the latest movie's villain once again. It's not unlike what we've seen in previous movies from the franchise, and it's what makes the character and his rogues so relatable.
We'll learn more when Spider-Man: Homecoming debuts in theaters on July 7.
