While Fox’s X-Men movie franchise seems to be spawning spinoffs at every turn, from Deadpool to Gambit to New Mutants, the future of the core series has been unclear. While X-Men: Apocalypse will introduce younger versions of the core character from the original X-Men trilogy – Tye Sheridan as Cyclops, Alexandra Shipp as Storm, and Sophie Turner as Jean Grey – the core cast of the prequel trilogy that began in X-Men: First Class – Michael Fassbender as Magneto, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Nicholas Hoult as Beast, and James McAvoy as Professor X – are all free of their contracts following Apocalypse, and no core series follow-up has been announced yet (though Fox does have a few untitled Marvel event movies on their schedule).

The amount of ambiguity surrounding the series’ future has led to all sorts of rumors concerning a hard reboot or even, combined with Marvel taking the Inhumans movie off their own schedule, the possibility of the franchise moving to Marvel Studios.

An interview with Sheridan in EW seems to indicate that Fox does have plans to continue the series with its current crop of actors, revealing that the 19-year-old actor is signed on to play Scott Summers in two more movies following Apocalypse.

It may be that this clause in Sheridan’s contract is just standard procedure, a matter of locking down franchise talent “just in case,” but between this and Singer’s own comments about having no plans to leave the franchise, all signs point towards the franchise staying at Fox and moving forward without any sort of reboot. There have even been rumors that the next X-Men film will begin filming in 2017, though Singer’s comments and plans to direct 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea would seem to contradict that theory.

Since the dawn of civilization, he was worshiped as a god. Apocalypse, the first and most powerful mutant from Marvel’s X-Men universe, amassed the powers of many other mutants, becoming immortal and invincible. Upon awakening after thousands of years, he is disillusioned with the world as he finds it and recruits a team of powerful mutants, including a disheartened Magneto (Michael Fassbender), to cleanse mankind and create a new world order, over which he will reign. As the fate of the Earth hangs in the balance, Raven (Jennifer Lawrence) with the help of Professor X (James McAvoy) must lead a team of young X-Men to stop their greatest nemesis and save mankind from complete destruction.
