The X-Men franchise has seen a resurgence in the last couple of years thanks to some unique takes with both new and beloved characters.

The success of Logan and Deadpool proved R-rated superhero moves can still bring in audiences, and Noah Hawley’s Legion on FX revealed people with powers can intrigue on a level beyond conflicts of good and evil.
These wins have pushed 20th Century Fox to continue mining their X-Men Universe with three new films entering production for release in 2018. But one film has long been in the development phase and still has yet to progress beyond casting the title character: Channing Tatum‘s Gambit.
X-Men movie producer Hutch Parker recently spoke with ScreenRant about the project and whether it was still in the works for the studio.
“It is. It is,” Parker said. “I don’t have any news on that but there’s still a desire and a passionate interest to see that movie made.”
Gambit suffered a setback after director Doug Liman exited the project last year so he could make Justice League Dark. But he too left the DC Comics-based film so he could focus on Chaos Walking as well as the Edge of Tomorrow sequel with Tom Cruise.

Producer Simon Kinberg spoke about the need to make a Gambit solo movie stand out much like the Deadpool movie, likening Tatum’s passion for the character to Ryan Reynolds’ for the Merc With The Mouth. And Fox has many other projects in the works that it wouldn’t make sense to rush a Gambit movie in an already crowded space.
The cajun master thief is a unique character and should be handled with care. With a vast array of characters at Fox’s disposal under the X-Men umbrella, they need a great concept, killer script, and talented director to make producing a Gambit movie worth the time and money.
New Mutants is the next X-film set to enter production, with Deadpool 2 and X-Men: Dark Phoenix to follow shortly after.
Matt Nix’s The Gifted is the next project hitting screens. The series has already been picked up and the Bryan Singer-directed pilot will premiere this fall.
