Spider-Man is Jewish, according to Andrew Garfield. Garfield, who plays Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, confirmed this to Time Out (via the Independent). "Spider-man is neurotic. Peter Parker is not a simple dude. He can't just switch off," Garfield said. "He never feels like he's doing enough. And Peter suffers from self-doubt. He ums and ahs about his future because he's neurotic. He's Jewish. It's a defining feature." "I hope Jewish people won't mind the cliché, because my father's Jewish. I have that in me for sure," Garfield continued. "He's an over-thinker. It would be much easier if he was a life-saving robot." Spider-Man was created by Stan Lee, a Jewish-American, in 1962. Spider-Man is sometimes considered to be an allegory for the Jewish population following World War II because of his status as an orphan with a hidden identity, making him relatable to those who lost family members during the Holocaust and feared future persecution. Of course, this is likely just Garfield's interpretation of the character, so nobody should get too upset if this doesn't gel with Spider-Man canon. In The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Peter Parker runs the gauntlet as the mysterious company Oscorp sends up a slew of supervillains against him, impacting on his life. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 comes to theaters May 2.
