It’s hard to believe how many notable names are returning for Avengers: Doomsday. Not only will the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s next team-up movie feature Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the franchise as Doctor Doom, but fellow mainstays Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, and Sebastian Stan are joining him. Newer faces aren’t being hung out to dry, though, as Florence Pugh, Pedro Pascal, and Vanessa Kirby are also getting in on the fun. However, none of those names on Doomsday‘s cast list stand out as much as a certain group of actors who are best known for playing mutants in Fox’s X-Men franchise.

While Patrick Stewart has already appeared in one MCU project, most of his former castmates haven’t, and with Marvel Studios about to reboot the X-Men, this will probably be their last chance to wear a super suit and flip around. Well, a couple of the mutants in Doomsday might have longer leashes because they’re coming over from another franchise, Deadpool. But it might not be a good idea for these characters to stick around, as the next Avengers movie is going to do serious damage to their reputations.
Gambit Is Going to Put His Serious Face on in Avengers: Doomsday

The major appeal of Deadpool & Wolverine is, of course, the team-up between the two titular characters. The Merc With a Mouth makes it clear early on in his big-screen career that he wants to fight alongside Logan, and he gets his chance when the Time Variance Authority threatens to wipe out his timeline. Unfortunately, despite finding a replacement for the original Wolverine, the TVA sends both mutants to the Void to live out their days as outcasts. Cassandra Nova soon introduces herself and offers Deadpool and Wolverine a deal. Not wanting to work for a maniac, the heroes decide to try their luck elsewhere. Their journey sees them cross paths with a group of freedom fighters, which consists of Elektra, X-23, Blade, and Gambit.
Saving the multiverse from Cassandra Nova is enough to earn the whole crew golden tickets. Deadpool returns home to reunite with his friends, bringing Wolverine and X-23 along with him; however, the status of everyone else remains a mystery. The only one confirmed for another appearance is Gambit, whose Cajun accent gives even the fast-talking Deadpool problems. Deadpool & Wolverine plays up the hilarious nature of Gambit’s character, showing how ridiculous a character who makes playing cards his weapons of choice can be. According to Channing Tatum, though, Remy LeBeau’s comedy days are over, as he will be toning down his accent in Doomsday. The Russo brothers apparently don’t want to go full “Deadpool,” which spells trouble for another member of the cast.
Deadpool Won’t Be Any Help If Avengers: Doomsday Tones Him Down

While there has been some back-and-forth online about Deadpool having a role in Doomsday, all signs point to the character getting to live out his dream of joining Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. More likely than not, he will appear alongside the X-Men during their scenes, helping fight back against Doom, who will be looking to seize control of the multiverse. Action sequences are going to be elevated with Ryan Reynolds’ character around, but if he’s fighting with his hands tied behind his back while verbally sparring with Doom and everyone else, it’s hard to imagine it being a worthwhile appearance. The point of bringing Deadpool into the fold is to embrace his character, for better or worse.
If the Russo brothers don’t think they can handle balancing different tones for different characters in Doomsday, they’re better off cutting some of the fat. They can leave Deadpool’s first interaction with the Avengers for another creative team to handle. It would be a shame since Avengers: Infinity War does a great job of keeping the humor of the Guardians of the Galaxy film intact, but it’s a different time. The MCU can’t risk taking chances, especially if one involves bringing in a foul-mouthed character that always demands the closest spotlight.
Avengers: Doomsday hits theaters on December 18, 2026.
