It sounds like the Star Wars sequel trilogy is going to follow a familiar pattern. If The Force Awakens was an adventurous romp similar to A New Hope (but not a rip-off), then Episode VIII will take cues from The Empire Strikes Back, adopting a darker tone, according to start John Boyega.

“It’s great. Much darker, but we’re very excited,” Boyega told Vogue of the film’s script.
Work on the film has only just begun though. Boyega said, “We just starting work on Star Wars VIII, the next film, so I’m back to keeping secrets again.”
This shouldn’t be terribly surprising news for anyone familiar with story structure. Trilogies tend to be at their darkest in the second act, so that the heroes’ victory in Act III can be that much more powerful.
