Sony’s Worst Marvel Movie is Now Streaming on Prime Video (And It’s Trending)

To say that Sony’s Marvel movies have been lackluster would be an understatement. While 2018’s Venom and its follow up, 2021’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage both ended up being crowd-pleasing box office successes, the same can’t be said for the rest of the studio’s Spider-Man Universe. While the films are all loosely connected and are based on Marvel Comics characters with connections to Spider-Man, not only did the films never really come together as a franchise and, for the films not featuring Venom, not only were they poorly received by critics but they were commercial failures as well.

But that hasn’t stopped the films of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe from having a new life on streaming and now, the arguably worst of the bunch is available to stream on Prime Video. No, we’re not talking about Madame Web; we’re talking about 2022’s Morbius, a film that blends comic book adventure with vampire concepts and became a movie fans love to hate.

Morbius stars Jared Leto as Michael Morbius, a doctor with a rare blood disease who ends up becoming a living vampire after his dangerous attempt to cure his condition turns him into the unnatural creature. The film also stars Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal, and Tyrese Gibson. While the film arguably had promise — in comics, Morbius is an interesting and sympathetic foe for Spider-Man who even goes on to be part of the publisher’s team of supernatural superheroes, the Midnight Sons — the actual execution of the film left a lot to be desired.  The film was widely panned for its writing, effects, and performances. Morbius even went on to win two Razzie awards: Worst Actor for Leto and Worst Supporting Actress for Arjona.

New Life As An Internet Meme

While Morbius may not have won over critics or audiences, the film does have a few things to its credit. For starters, while it’s one of the worst of Sony’s Marvel movies, another film in the franchise actually performed worse with critics. The film with that distinction? Madame Web. Morbius has also found a new life as an internet meme, something that started around the time the film was released with people online having a lot of fun making jokes that incorporated various versions of “Morbius” as plays on words, such as joking that the film would make a “morbillion” dollars and people adapting Ben Grimm’s “It’s Clobberin’ Time” catchphrase to be “It’s Morbin’ Time.”

It’s also worth noting that Morbius may end up attaining cult status now that the film is available to stream on Prime Video. As of this article’s writing, Morbius is listed as a “trending” movie on the platform, just going to show that something can be so bad, there might still be some good in it yet.

Morbius is now streaming on Prime Video.
