This 25 Year Old Supernatural Thriller Is Finally Streaming Again (And It Has a Surprising Marvel Connection)

A decades-old supernatural thriller with a surprising Marvel connection has finally found its way back to streaming. Blurring the lines between reality and the paranormal by blending the suspense and tension of thrillers with the otherworldly scares of the supernatural, supernatural thrillers are some of the most gripping movies to hit the screen. As major streaming services like Netflix, HBO Max, Paramount+, and more have rolled out their September lineups, a great but often forgotten thriller headed back to streaming.

As of September 1st, The Gift (2000) is available to stream on Paramount+. The supernatural thriller about a woman who becomes involved in a local missing person case after she experiences a psychic vision is the farthest thing from the superhero movies lighting up the big screen today, but it has a surprising connection to Marvel. The Gift was directed by Sam Raimi in his final movie before he directed the Spider-Man trilogy, and it brought the director together with stars Rosemary Harris and J.K. Simmons, both of whom would go on to star in Raimiโ€™s Spider-Man movies as Aunt May Parker and J. Jonah Jameson.

Why You Should Watch The Gift

The Gift doesnโ€™t reinvent the wheel, but it is a solid by-the-numbers whodunit that will keep viewers guessing until the end and is exceptionally well-crafted under Raimiโ€™s direction. The film’s central mystery revolves around a murder investigation, the movie blending a realistic human drama with more supernatural elements through a hauntingly powerful performance by Cate Blanchett as Annabelle “Annie” Wilson, a woman who finds herself entwined with the case after she experiences a psychic vision. Keanu Reeves, Katie Holmes, and Hilary Swank also deliver strong performances that help carry the storyline.

The movie, which drew mixed reviews from critics and audience members with 57% Tomatometer and 55% Popcornmeter ratings on Rotten Tomatoes, is a masterclass in atmospheric storytelling. In the film, Raimi delivers a tense and chilling psychological thriller that is a compelling story, a slow-burn suspense, and features more than enough twists to keep viewers invested.

New Movies Streaming on Paramount+

The Gift is one of several new titles that joined the Paramount+ streaming library this September. Every month, the streamer rolls out new TV shows and films. As always, the start of the month brought the biggest wave of arrivals. Movies including Face/Off, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Like Water for Chocolate, Murder on the Orient Express, National Lampoonโ€™s Animal House, Road to Perdition, and Universal Soldier began streaming on the platform on September 1st.

Above everything else, the Paramount+ September lineup put a spotlight on horror just in time for Halloween. Subscribers looking for some scares can now stream horror movies such as the first eight Friday the 13th films, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Crow, The Monster Squad, and The Woman in Black.
