With Transformers: The Last Knight storming into theaters this weekend, some are wondering what exactly the future of the franchise will be. While director Michael Bay will not be returning to direct a future installment, he has reassured that the franchise will still live on - and that plenty of ideas are already in place.
During a recent interview with Fandango, Bay revealed that plans regarding the future of the Transformers franchise began being made around two years ago, after a rather productive session with a writers' room.
"But the reason I wanted to do a number five, because we had a writer's room that I kind of asked for about two years ago." Bay explained. "We got twelve great writers together and they kind of created a viable way the universe could go. Spielberg and I liked a couple of stories. We merged them together and that's what created number five."
This shouldn't come as too much of a surprise to fans of the franchise, as Bay revealed earlier this year that over a dozen potential Transformers films are currently in development. As to whether or not The Last Knight teases these future installments, Bay offered a bit of a tease.
"If you watch it closely," Bay revealed, "there are a lot of ways that this movie can go from here. So it's basically like a launching board for wherever the series will continue."
Several of those paths are getting closer to hitting screens. The already-announced Bumblebee prequel will reportedly begin filming later this year, and a prequel set in Ancient Rome is currently in development. Bay did hint that he would potentially return to the franchise to direct one of the spinoffs - particularly an R-rated one.
In Transformers: The Last Knight, humans are at war with the Transformers, and Optimus Prime is gone. The key to saving the future lies buried in the secrets of the past and the hidden history of Transformers on Earth. Now, it's up to the unlikely alliance of Cade Yeager (Mark Wahlberg), Bumblebee, an English lord (Anthony Hopkins) and an Oxford professor (Laura Haddock) to save the world.
Transformers: The Last Knight is directed by Michael Bay. The film stars Mark Wahlberg and Stanley Tucci reprising their roles from Transformers: Age of Extinction, with Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson and John Turturro reprising roles from the first three Transformers movies.
Transformers: The Last Knight's voice cast includes Peter Cullen as Optimus Prime, John Goodman as Hound, and John DiMaggio as Crosshairs. Other transformers appearing the film include Bumblebee, Drift, Hot Rod, Cogman, Canopy, Sqweeks, Grimlock, Megatron, Barricade, Onslaught, Hooligan, and Mohawk.
Transformers: The Last Knight opens in theaters on June 21, 2017.
