This Monday, The Flash comes to Supergirl in the first cross-network DC TV Universe crossover. As Barry Allen attempts to find new ways to get faster, he accidentally traverses to another universe - his third - and one where the refugees of Krypton are heroes. This leads to The Flash and Supergirl having their first team-up (and their first race), but it doesn't have to be one and done.
"We would love that," executive producer Greg Berlanti told THR when asked about another crossover - one where Supergirl goes to The CW speedster's series. "We're waiting to see the audience reaction from something like this."
They didn't consider doing that first, though, as they really wanted "to bring the veteran from [The Flash] to the chemistry of a new show [Supergirl]."
While Barry is the only one to make the trip this time around, Berlanti hopes that once the door opens, "it's open" for future crossovers. That means supporting casts, and even Arrow characters could traverse worlds in the future. While it would probably include The Flash as the gateway regardless, the possibility is there. The similarities between Barry and Kara, the way they're "daytime heroes that live more in the light," along with Barry's ability already to traverse time and other dimensions, made it an easy call who'd go first.
The storylines for both shows matched up in the right way - Supergirl needed a friend and heroic mentor, and The Flash was already traversing worlds, and that's how "it all came together," Berlanti said.
Supergirl's Earth, it sounds like, won't get a numerical destination, at least not on any official, catalogged notion, but The Flash will come back from that world changed, and with his own new perspective. His journey there and back will happen in the next episode of The Flash, that airs the day after Supergirl, a simple logistical airing order that came from airing on two networks.
Supergirl: Worlds Finest airs Monday, March 28 at 8pm on CBS.
