Taken 3 stayed true to its namesake and nabbed the top spot at the box office this weekend.

Not only did the movie debut with a $40.4 million sum but the final installment of the series also scored the second-best January opening of all time.

In the film, Liam Neeson returns as ex-covert operative Bryan Mills, whose reconciliation with his ex-wife is tragically cut short when she is brutally murdered. Consumed with rage, and framed for the crime, he goes on the run to evade the relentless pursuit of the CIA, FBI and the police. For one last time, Mills must use his "particular set of skills," to track down the real killers, exact his unique brand of justice, and protect the only thing that matters to him now – his daughter.

The film also stars Frank Dotzler, Sam Spruell, Dougray Scott, Famke Janssen, and Forest Whitaker.

Civil Rights biopic, Selma, came in second with $11.2 million.

Into The Woods came in third with $9.8 million.

The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies dropped to fourth this week with $9.4 million.

With $8.4 million, Unbroken rounds out the top five.
