The Walking Dead Inside The After

AMC has released a video going inside The Walking Dead's mid-season premiere, "After." In the video, the cast and crew discuss the the episode's themes and what kind of place these characters are in. They begin with Rick Grimes, and where he is as the episode begins. "These characters lost everything," says The Walking Dead's creator, Robert Kirkman. "They're living in this world, this world overcome by zombies." "We see this manifest itself in Rick," says executive producer Greg Nicotero. "He's lost everything except for Carl." "He's so fearful for his son because he's so weak," says actor Andrew Lincoln. "You see a man that's trying to reassert that role in an aggressive protective manner." They then discuss Rick's son, Carl. "Carl sees himself as actually a superior survivor to his father," says executive producer Gale Anne Hurd. "He's angry about losing the prison," says executive producer Scott M. Gimple. "He's angry about losing his loved ones." "He thinks its [Rick's] fault for not going out and trying to kill The Governor like Michonne was," says actor Chandler Riggs. And lastly, they discuss Michonne. "Michonne's whole storyline is 'she has a choice,'" says Nicotero. "Will she choose death or will she choose life?" "She shuts herself down in order to not feel, and not to metabolize the pain" says actress Danai Gurira, "because to metabolize it, she feels, could break her." "She's now at a place where she literally is, emotionally, the walking dead," says executive producer Dave Alpert. The Walking Dead airs Sundays on AMC.
