In tonight's new episode of The Walking Dead, they did it. They really did it. They shot Carl in the face. Not just the face - Ron shot Carl right in the eye.

To recap, little Sam couldn't hold it together while walking amongst the undead and he cost himself, his mother Jessie, and his brother Ron their lives. While Sam and Jessie were getting devoured, Jessie held on to Carl's hand, leaving Rick no choice but to cut it off and free his son. Having watched Rick kill his father and, now, chop his mom's hand off, Ron was done. He took aim at Rick but was stabbed in the back by Michonne. The sudden slicing caused him to pull the trigger in a random direction, ultimately shooting Carl in the face.

By the end of the episode, we see Carl patched up and unconscious in the infirmary. It was just like in the comics.

So, in the comics, does Carl live? Yes.

In The Walking Dead comics Carl is shot in the eye in the same moments, however, it was the comic book counter part of Deanna Monroe (Douglas) who accidentally turned him into a cyclops.

Carl goes on with a chunk of his face missing and it becomes a major part of what defines him as a character. It also plays a major part in his relationship with the villainous Negan we know to be approaching on the TV series.

The Walking Dead airs Sundays at 9 PM ET on AMC.
