Both professionals and fans joined The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman in receiving a number of creepy "packages from Woodbury" this week.

The packages contained a number of items -- an old-fashioned key, a torn letter from The Governor and some Polaroids, as well as a lock of hair -- all smeared in "blood." It came with no return address.

It's presumably a viral promotion of some kind, although it's hard to know whether it's meant to be for the upcoming season of the TV series, the just-announced video game, a new prose novel or something else entirely.

While The Governor is dead and Woodbury is no longer a part of the story on AMC's The Walking Dead, the history of the town before Rick Grimes and his band of survivors happened upon it has been explored at length in a series of tie-in novels co-written by Kirkman. Some fans are speculating that some of that backstory could be explored in flashback this season -- a device which producers have revealed they will be taking advantage of in Season Six.

Of course, it's not unreasonable to draw comparisons between Woodbury and Alexandria -- the walled-in city where Rick and company find themselves this year. It's been noted that The Wolves, a vicious gang not averse to using zombies as living weapons against other survivors, are the sort of people who would be very much like The Governor were they in charge of a place like Alexandria. The Wolves are, at least it seems, the season's primary threat.

The Walking Dead Season 6 premieres on AMC on October 11. For fans who can't wait that long, Fear The Walking Dead debuts later this month.
