The Stray
Elsie, the main behaviorist, previously discovered an out of date satellite uplink in the arm of a host that wandered away and killed himself when he was found.
When Elsie and Stubbs, Head of Security, went into the park to track down the lost host in The Stray episode and bring him back, he automatically kill himself when they found him stuck in a canyon. Almost as if the lost host was programmed to self destruct.
Elsie was rather taken aback by the host’s odd behavior and wanted to look into what exactly happened. However, Stubbs wasn’t very concerned and basically told Elsie that it wasn’t worth the effort and hosts sometimes wander for no reason.
They chopped of the hosts head in the body shop and were about the send him to the incinerator when Elsie snuck in to investigate, leading to her discovering the old satellitte uplink. She did not discuss this with Stubbs, but immediately went to Bernard.
Westworld Is Seeing Red
One thing we noticed immediatley in this past episode, The Adversary, was the rampant use of the color red in the Delos company offices. The walls, halls, and offices were blood red in places that are usually a dull, industrial gray color.
Showrunners often use color to set the mood of a scene or foreshadow events to come. In this case, we think the color red symbolizes a violent death.
The color red is often pyschologically married to upcoming dangers and threats, as in “seeing red.”
Someone is going to die.
Bernard and Elsie Investigate
Determined to figure out what this old laser uplink was doing in a host’s arm, Elsie traces the signal to an old satellite owned by Delos. Meaning someone on the inside is behind the data breach. She tracks an odd signal to an old relay box, which is hiding somewhere in a shut down sector.
She keeps Bernard abreast of the situation and says she is going to sector 3 alone to a creepy, dark, old theater where the relay box is located. Last time Elsie tried to go out into the park alone, Stubbs stepped in to stop her, suggesting that he accompany her.
As Elsie is going through the sessions logged in the relay box, which is turned on and broadcasting voices or instructions to the 47 generation 1 hosts left in the park, Bernard is about to tell Teresa what the situation is. That is, until Elsie calls to tell him that Teresa was the last login used on the relay.
Back in the theater, Elsie continues to go through to box, talking to herself about what she is finding. She can tell that the hosts are being messed with on a primitive level by an unknown user. She gives Bernard a call to tell him and attempts to get the hell out of there.
Someone Grabs Elsie
On her way out, the moment we’ve all been waiting for finally happens. Someone, who happens to be wearing a black shirt, throws an arm around Elsie and grabs her as she lets out a squeal. The episode ends there, allowing to viewer to assume that she is a total goner.
However, we have a different theory.
Elsie Is Not Dead…
…because Stubbs is the person who grabbed her. If anything he is definitely not going to kill her, but save her before she gets in too deep and someone catches her. Stubbs is constantly in the map room, monitoring all of the activity in the entire park. He would have seen if something was amiss in Sector 3 and known how to get there quickly.
Remember how he wouldn’t let Elsie venture into the park alone because he “doesn’t trust the place?” We think he grabbed Elsie to protect her and not murder her.
It’s also entirely possible that Stubbs is somehow involved or aware of what’s really going on in the park. He did suggest that Elsie not look into the stray host, and he is the head of security who is always wearing a BLACK uniform.
Do you think that Elsie was killed or rescued?
