Taika Waititi is in negotiations to helm Thor 3, according to The Wrap.

Waititi is a New Zealand filmmaker best known for directing an episode of HBO's Flight of the Conchords and co-directing and co-writing the 2014 vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows with Flight of the Conchords' star Jemaine Clement. Both Waititi and Clement starred in the film as well. He also penned the script for Disney's animated movie Moana.

The Wrap claims that Waititi beat out Zombieland (2009) and Gangster Squad (2013) director Ruben Fleischer to become Marvel's top pick for the gig. The first Thor film was helmed by Kenneth Branagh (Cinderella) and its sequel Thor: The Dark World was directed by Alan Taylor (Terminator Genisys).

If negotiations go well, Waititi will direct Chris Hemsworth in his third solo outing as the God of Thunder, based on a script written by Christopher Yost and Craig Kyle.

Thor: Ragnarok will be released on November 3, 2017.
