In the spinoff film, a priest is dispatched to investigate the mysterious death of a nun in Rome.

The priest will be played by Alien: Covenant's Demián Bichir and the demonic nun will once again by played by Bonnie Aarons. The film also recently cast Taissa Farmiga, younger sister of The Conjuring's Vera Farmiga, starring as a fellow nun. Hope is slated to play the character Sister Victoria, a nun who is plagued by a demonic presence.

It's not uncommon for horror film franchises to feature shared universe, dating all the way back to the Universal Monster films in which Frankenstein's Monster could collide with The Wolf Man, but The Conjuring has proved a completely different beast.

The first film introduced a doll haunted by a demonic entity, referred to as Annabelle, that featured a compelling enough backstory that it received its own spin-off film, Annabelle.

Audiences couldn't get enough of the adventures of Ed and Lorraine Warren, which resulted in a sequel to the original film getting made, The Conjuring 2.

The original film's first spin-off was successful enough at the box office that it's receiving a sequel, Annabelle: Creation, and now The Nun is being spun-out from The Conjuring 2.

Regardless of your personal opinions of the individual installments, the shared universe helmed by James Wan has been fascinating to see unfold, whereas other franchises have previously relied on making countless sequels to an original idea.

The Nun will be helmed by Corin Hardy, famous for his Irish monster movie The Hallow, and is slated to hit theaters July 13, 2018.
