DeGeneres joined GMA to talk about the film and how she channeled her inner sadness in order to bring her character Dory to life once again. She told JuJu Chang of GMA that when people see the movie she “just wants people to keep swimming.”

“There’s always another way, that’s a new message in this movie,” continued DeGeneres.”And that is the truth. There’s always another way. Don’t ever just, you know, put up with something or just say, ‘Well that’s the way it is.’ And then your disadvantage can actually be your strength. So if you have a disability. You should embrace what it is – it empowers you in a different way.”

DeGeneres tapped into her past fears and inner sadness from the experience of coming out as a gay woman in Hollywood. She had to channel this sadness strictly through the use of her voice. DeGeneres stated, “With your voice, you know, you have to feel those emotions. You have to give that fish complete human emotions. And when you cry, you know, I cried. I had to cry. Because otherwise, the audience isn’t going to be in the theater crying when there’s such an emotional scene if they’re not involved and attached to that character.”

Finding Dory swims into theaters June 17, 2016.
