Now they’ve we’ve come off the high of watching the trailer for the fifth time or so, we’re going to examine some of the most interesting scenes and what questions they raise.

SPOILER WARNING: There will be speculation that includes possible spoilers for Season 6 as I use knowledge from George R.R. Maritn’s books and rumors from the set to try to piece together some of these major moments.

Game of Thrones returns to HBO on April 24.

What are the Greyjoys up to?

During the trailer, we see a scene of people gathered on an island coast. The banners have krakens on them, marking the people there as Greyjoys and Greyjoy bannermen.

This could mean a number of things, but it is most likely a Kingsmoot, a meeting of powerful captains to determine the next king of the Iron Islands when there is dispute. In the books, Balon Greyjoy suddenly dies, leaving his chair vacant. Yara and several other members of the royal family vie for power, beginning with the Kingsmoot.

We know that Season 6 will introduce some of Yara’s rivals, making the Kingsmoot likely a major scene.

War in the North?

The trailer certainly suggests that Bolton rule at Winterfell will be challenged. We see an early scene of a flayed man burning in front of an army, and then another of an army charging at shield wall, with the shield’s all painted with the House Bolton sigil.

The first scene overlaps with Melisandre questioning the vision of victory she saw in her flames. She presumed it was victory for Stannis, but perhaps it was victory in the coming battle.

We can’t make out the banners of the opposing army, but rumors from the set suggest that an army of those loyal to House Stark would amass for a huge battle against the Boltonsโ€ฆ.and that army is said to be led by Jon Snow.

Jon Snow, dead or alive?

We see multiple shots of Jon Snow’s dead body in the trailer. The trailer actually opens on his body still lying in the courtyard of Castle Black, but we also see a scene with Davos Seaworth taking Longclaw. There’s also a scene of someone putting their hand on Jon’s face.

We can’t be certain, but we’d assume that hand belonged to Melisandre. As a Red Priestess, Melisandre worships the Lord of Light, R’hllor. This is the god that brought Beric Dondarrion back from the dead when Thoros of Myr prays. Thus, it’s been a common theory that Melisandre will similarly revive Jon.

Is this that moment? Could be.

Is this young Ned Stark at the Tower of Joy?

We know that Bran Stark will use his new powers to see into the future and the past of Westeros in the new season of Game of Thrones. Rumors and speculation have it that one major moment in history that Bran will view is the battle at the Tower of Joy.

The Tower of Joy was where Rhaegar Targaryen kept Lyanna Stark during Robert’s Rebellion. The battle pit Ned and his allies against three members of the Kingsguard. Only Ned and Howland Reed, father of Jojen and Meera, survived, and only they knew the promise that Ned made to Lyanna on her deathbed.

There’s an image of six men with swords drawn marching through the sunlight, and one in the front sure could pass for a young Ned Stark. There another scene of a man in shining armor fighting two leather clad men like the ones in the previously mentioned scene. The armored man bears a sigil of House Targaryen, which practically guarantees this is a flashback, most likely the Tower of Joy.

Bran and the Night King?

The core part of the trailer closes with a scene of Bran coming face to face with the Night King. The fact that Bran is standing suggests that this is one of his visions, but does the Night King notice him? Could Bran’s visions reveal the secrets of the White Walkers and their origins?
