In 2015, audiences returned to the world of Jurassic Park with a brand new film, Jurassic World. The film, directed by Colin Trevorrow, was a huge box office success, and it wasn’t long before Jurassic World 2 was greenlit, with Trevorrow co-writing the script and Juan Antonio Bayona sliding into the director’s chair.

However, we now know that there is a grander plan at work. Bayona has confirmed that Jurassic World is planned as a film trilogy. Bayona confirmed this while answering a question about what Universal Pictures hopes he’ll bring to Jurassic World 2.
“I think they love The Impossible and The Orphanageโespecially Colin (Trevorrow) loved those movies,” Bayona told LRM, referencing his previous directorial film credits. “It’s very interesting. The whole Jurassic World is a trilogy that Colin Trevorrow has envisioned. We’re writing the second chapter, and it’s very interesting where he’s leading the story. I grew up watching Steven Spielberg movies and I love those movies and the legacy, so it’s a question of being truthful to the legacy and at the same time, bringing new stuff that people will appreciate. We are still six months ahead of shooting, and so far, so good. It’s very exciting right now.”
The original Jurassic Park franchise ended up being a trilogy, with The Lost World: Jurassic Park and Jurassic Park III following the original Jurassic Park. However, those films were created on an episodic, case-by-case basis. It seems like Trevorrow and company are attempting to do something on a larger scale, using more forethought and planning.
Jurassic World stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. The film revolves around a new, fully functional dinosaur theme park located on Isla Nublar, the site of the original Jurassic Park. In an attempt to draw larger crowds, the company running Jurassic World, InGen, creates a genetically modified dinosaur called the Indominus Rex, which escapes captivity to wreak havoc on the park and its patrons.
No official details about Jurassic World 2‘s plot have been revealed. There has been some rumor and speculation that it will follow up on a subplot from Jurassic World involving selling Jurassic World’s raptors to the military.
Jurassic World 2 is scheduled for release on June 22, 2018.
