Lights Out Director Records Unofficial Commentary After Fan Suggestion

Many of the most devoted horror fans dismissed last summer’s Lights Out for its seemingly silly premise and PG-13 rating, but its use of light and silhouette gave anyone willing to check it out some effective scares using silhouette and negative space. Audiences responded to the film pretty well and it performed decently at the box office, and director David F. Sandberg’s skills behind the camera earned him directorial duties on the upcoming Annabelle 2. And, based on a recent interaction on Twitter, Sandberg clearly respects his fans and responds to their feedback, going to so far as to release a bootleg commentary for his film.

On Saturday night, a fan tweeted to the director about their disappointment over the special features on the Lights Out home video release. The Blu-ray only has a couple of deleted scenes, and a fan was hoping to gain more insight into the making of the film with a commentary by the director. Five hours after the initial tweet, the fan’s calls were answered.

Sandberg recorded the commentary with his wife, who acts in the film, and shows how passionate he was about the project. The film was based on a short he made, also called Lights Out, so getting to explore bigger themes in a feature-length movie must have been a dream come true.

Regardless of what you thought of the film, seeing a director respond to fans like this is great to see, and is a great example of how social media has blurred the lines between fans and creators, allowed them to interact and respond to one another in ways previously impossible.
