Throughout his illustrious career, Woody Harrelson has had a handful of dramatic performances but is mostly known for his comedic turns in movies like Kingpin, Zombieland, and the TV show Cheers. The actor was expected to lend his brand of laid-back humor to the upcoming Star Wars spin-off, which the actor assured fans would be one of the most humorous in the franchise. Interestingly, the actor reveals that audiences shouldn't look to him to provide the film's most entertaining sequences.
When speaking to Entertainment Tonight about Alden Ehrenreich, who is playing Han Solo in the film, Harrelson gushed, "He's a great actor and a great guy, [with a] great sense of humor. I think a lot of humor comes through what he's doing. I think it could be one of the funnier Star Wars movies."
The Star Wars saga has always been known to blend action and drama with entertainment, full of hilarious characters and silly scenarios. However, to refer to any installment as a "comedy" would be quite the stretch. In fact, one of the rumored reasons for the departure of directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller earlier this year was that the film was leaning too heavily into comedy, as opposed to the more whimsical tone we've seen in other films.
Throughout the saga, Han Solo has never been known as a jokester, but his sarcastic and often cynical nature acted as a good juxtaposition of the rest of the characters' hope and optimism. Regardless of the directorial shake-up, it sounds like Ehrenreich found the appropriate balance of sarcasm and authenticity for the role.
The untitled Han Solo film lands in theaters May 25, 2018.
