Next year, Lucasfilm is slated to debut its second standalone Star Wars film, and expectations for the project are high given Rogue One: A Star Wars Story‘s success. The first spinoff film dived into cinemas last winter, leaving fans and critics to balance holiday obligations with one very geeky excursion. The yet-titled Han Solo flick will inevitably find itself compared to the first feature, but Lucasfilm doesn’t seem concerned about its newest line of sci-fi films. In fact, the company appears to be embracing the new storytelling venue. If recent reports are true, Lucasfilm will soon decide on which standalone movies should be given a green-light following Star Wars: Episode IX.

Thanks to Star Wars News Net, the fan-site got ahold of an interview Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy did with a Spanish site known as E-Cartela. The translated interview tells fans that Kennedy and her team will soon meet to develop its new slate of standalone features.
“To be honest, we are beginning to talk about [the spinoffs] right now. We have four or five weeks immersed in the film ‘Han Solo’ and we are about to read the script of Colin Trevorrow’s Episode IX directed, so we have a lot of work at the moment,” Kennedy explained.
“In the next six or eight months we will have some meetings about the stories that we will develop here. After 40 years of adventures, fans have so much information and so many theories about the way that can take these stories and theories that emerge are sometimes new ideas for us that we hear, read and pay attention to everything what is said. It is clear that the franchise is owned by the as much by the fans as it’s owned by [the people at Lucasfilm].”
Recently, rumors surfaced that Lucasfilm was already looking at a writer to helm one of its mysterious standalones. Sites suggested that Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail was being sought after by the studio. The rumors also suggested the film Esmail would pen would be one based on Obi-Wan Kenobi – something which would make Ewan McGregor very happy to hear.
