When The Force Awakens was announced and Star Wars fans learned that many of the original cast were returning to reprise their roles, we couldn’t wait to see what had happened to our favorite characters since we last saw them in Return of the Jedi. Audiences learned more information about Han Solo, Chewbacca, and Leia Organa, but Luk Skywalker’s fate remained a mystery, only appearing in the film’s final scene. Based on the first trailer, Luke will play a more prominent role in The Last Jedi, but could this be Hamill’s final portrayal of the character? When speaking with Fandango, Hamill teased his character’s story coming to an end.

During the Last Jedi panel itself, Hamill explained that while reading the script for The Force Awakens, he was excited when he thought he was going to play a prominent role, but was a little disappointed at how little he was in the final film. However, he did explain not being the star of a film allowed him to enjoy the film as a fan, a feeling that continued in last year’s Rogue One.
When speaking about viewing the film, he revealed, “That’s why I enjoy Rogue One so muchโฆbecause I’m not in it. This is a little too high-profile for me.” When discussing if he might be able to enjoy Episode IX in a similar way, he joked, “To be determined.”
Despite the shift in the saga’s focus, Hamill doesn’t seem to mind.
“[Luke] had an arc [in the original trilogy], and I think Carrie [Fisher] and Harrison [Ford] admitted their characters were pretty much the same throughout, but Luke was always changing,” Hamill explained of his character’s journey. “Now we have this 30-year gap between the films, so a lot of if is conjecture. It’s not specifically my story โ Rey is now the protagonist.”
Adding fuel to the speculation fire, Hamill confessed he didn’t totally see eye-to-eye on his character’s journey. “I think you’ll find some things that’ll surprise you,” Hamill said. “They certainly surprised me. I said to Rian, I think I fundamentally disagree with everything you’ve decided for me. Now having said that, I have to accept it, get my mind around it and do my best to realize your vision. Once I got into it, a lot of my fears went away.”
