Michael Fassbender Compares Assassin’s Creed To Star Wars

The world of Star Wars can be quite dense, with layers upon layers of interactions, characters, and lore to dive into. That said, the foundation is predicated upon a simple idea, the war between the light and the darkness. An empire has been built around that rather simple premise, and no matter how much else is added to the pool, that idea will always remain prominent.

The world of Assassin’s Creed is much different in how it handles it’s characters and history due to the nature of the central conflict. Assassin’s Creed actor Michael Fassbender addressed the differences between the two in the latest issue of Empire.

“It’s not like Star Wars, where you’ve got the light side and the dark side,” Fassbender tells us. “This is very ambiguous morally. Both of these parties – the Templars and the Assassins – are hypocritical at certain points. There are not clear-cut good and bad characters. I think it’s a little more provocative for an audience to see that. You know, ‘Should I be feeling that? Should I be backing this character?’ That’s always fun.”

The Assassin’s are depicted in the games as the side of good, as they ultimately have the people’s better interests in mind. Still, to achieve that end they must dip heavily into the pools of gray, killing and cutting a swath through governments and regimes for the betterment of mankind. It’s a slippery slope too, and more than a few have fallen too far down it, becoming as corrupt as the enemies they are dedicated to fighting.

Assassin’s Creed hits theaters on December 21.
