Saturday Night Live has been busy this year. The long-running show entered its 42nd season in 2016, and the series has made the milestone a memorable one. So far, the show has welcomed hosts like Margot Robbie, Emily Blunt, Tom Hanks, Benedict Cumberbatch, and more. Now, fans have learned that another franchise star is about to step foot into Studio 8H. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’s Felicity Jones is headed to the late-night series on January 14.
If you are not familiar with the actress, then you have likely at least seen her face. The actress is the star of Rogue One as she plays Jyn Erso, the recruited Rebel who helps lead a team to steal plans to the Imperial’s Death Star. Fans will also know the British actress from her role as Jane Hawking in The Theory of Everything. She starred opposite of Eddie Redmayne and was nominated for honors such as a Golden Globe, SAG, BAFTA, and an Academy Award.
Next year, Jones will have the chance to stretch her comedic skills when it comes to Saturday Night Live. The sketch series will have the actress pull off a cold open before she stars in a slew of one-act shows with the series’ regular cast.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hit US theaters December 16, 2016. Directed by Gareth Edwards, it's the first of the new standalone features from Lucasfilm and Disney, which take place outside the core "Skywalker Saga" of films noted by an Episode number. Rogue One tells the story of the small band of rebels that were tasked with stealing the plans to the first Death Star. The story spins directly off the opening crawl from the original Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. In that crawl, it read: "Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic Empire. During the battle, Rebel spies managed to steal secret plans to the Empire’s ultimate weapon, the DEATH STAR, an armored space station with enough power to destroy an entire planet."
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is set between the events of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and shortly before the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. In the film, resistance fighters embark on a daring mission to steal the Empire's plans for the Death Star.
