Although Simon actor Steven Ogg is quick to admit he would “love” to get more time on set and screen with Negan actor Jeffrey Dean Morgan, he bills their constant separation and a testament to their “level of trust.”

“Whenever Jeff and I see each other on set we’re like, ‘What have you been up to?’” Ogg said. “I am like, the most un-right hand, right hand man. I am the right hand man that’s never really right there.”

“It’s like if you trust your right hand man to get s— done, well, yeah,” Ogg said. “[Simon is] off doing s—. There’s a lot of stuff that needs to get done.”

“I would love to have, obviously, more of that and there’s probably going to be some, you know, they’re definitely going to have to be talking about stuff because we’re going to need to see that, so yeah. It’ll be exciting with those two.”

Ogg sees Simon, Negan, and the rest of the Saviors as having a similar dynamic to iconic bands. “They’re Nirvana when Kurt Cobain was the lead and Dave Grohl’s on the drums,” Ogg said. “Well, Dave Grohl, he was the drummer, but he was a fantastic drummer, and he didn’t want to be in the spotlight. Not because he couldn’t take it because as we see, he’s an amazing front man with the Foo Fighters. So I’m curious, you know, about that.”

By that metaphor, it sounds like Ogg might be teasing Simon taking a leadership role of his own, but that’s another story in itself.

“Is the Saviors like the Nirvana, and then is there a Foo Fighters?” Ogg asks. “Is there a Simon who decides, ‘Yeah, it’s been great behind the drums, but now I’m ready because I think Simon could be a leader but I think he likes being behind the drum set’? It’s the most important role in the band, and you just don’t have to have that pressure of being the front man.”

Ogg’s role in The Walking Dead can be caught in The Walking Dead: The Complete Seventh Season which is available on Blu-ray now.
