The Walking Dead has adopted an approach of titling its episodes based on iconic lines of dialogue packed within them.

Throughout Season 7, each episode’s title has been given based on a line delivered by a character either within the episode, in Season 1, or on a piece of cardboard signage above a grace.
On the following slides, we run through all 16 episodes of The Walking Dead‘s seventh season to unveil which character delivered the titular line on Sunday nights. Needless to say, spoilers for The Walking Dead Season 7 follow. However, it will also be a reminder of how far the AMC series has come in just 16 episodes.
The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be
Episode 7×01 of The Walking Dead saw Negan’s brutal introduction wreaking havoc upon our survivors. In killing both Abraham and Glenn and completely humiliating Rick Grimes in front of his people, Neganย made those who survived think they may have been more fortunate if they hadn’t.
The episode’s title was one of very few in Season 7 not directly spoken within the broadcast. Instead, “The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be” got its title from Dr. Edwin Jenner’sย statement to Rick back in Season 1 when he allowed the group a chance to survive outside of the exploding CDC in Atlanta.
For a while, it looked like Jenner would be right.

The Well
The Well was the complete opposite of The Walking Dead‘sย Season 7 premiere. On the heels of the darkest, most violent episode in the show’sย history, the AMCย series introduced King Ezekiel and his Kingdom community as Morgan and Carol ventured within their walls.
Offering optimism and resources required to survive, King Ezekiel instilled proper ethics in his community which is also struggling to handle the Saviors.
“You drink from the well, you replenish the well,” is the motto of the Kingdom, constantly reminding them to care for one another. It’s a lifestyle The Walking Dead characters are not accustomed to.
ย
The Cell
The title of episode 7×03 of The Walking Dead was never directly spoken by a character within it but it was the theme of the entire run.
Daryl Dixon was trapped in the cell at Negan’sย Sanctuary and tortured by Dwight and others. Little did fans of The Walking Dead know at the time, but Daryl would go on to escape the cell only for Sasha to find herself locked away in it heading into the Season 7 finale.
The closest comparison came in the description of the Sanctuary’s rules. “Two, you get out of your cell, you work for points, but you’re gonna wish you were dead,” was one of the options Dwight presented to the surviving Dixon brother.

Service
The Walking Dead Episode 7×04 saw Negan making his first trip to Alexandria. In doing so, he trotted around the Safe-Zone, taking his pick at half of the community’s stuff and claiming it for himself and his group. All the while, Rick looked on while holding the bat which killed Glenn and Abraham days before.
On his way out, Neganย demanded Rick thank him for killing a zombie and offering such protection to the community. If Nicholas’ sendoff which put Glenn under a dumpster a year before hadn’t been titled “Thank You,” Episode 7×04 likely would have had the title.
Instead, the episode was called, “Service,” which was the word Neganย used to describe his efforts with Rick, which also included pointing out that “the fat lady” was in charge of rations.

Go Getters
Episode 7×05 of The Walking Dead, Go Getters, saw Maggie’s return to Sunday nights for the first time since her husband was beaten to death in the Season 7 premiere.ย
Negan thinking Maggie dead, the character was actually spending her nights at the Hilltop with Jesus but following the orders of cowardly leader Gregory. After a zombie attack launched on the group by the Saviors, Maggie and Sashaย stepped up to protect the community from a threatening invasion.ย
In Go Getters, it was Simon who delivered the titular line in a conversation with Gregory. After talking about Rick’s slaying of Savior compound in Season 6, he told Gregory the Alexandria bunch works for the Saviors, now, and describes them as “real go-getters.”
The episode also included Carl and Enid’s kiss.

Swear
Swear, Episode 7×06 of The Walking Dead, saw Tara and Heath return to the AMC series for the first time since heading out on a supply run late in Season 6.ย
While Heath disappeared for what seems to be a permanent “farewell,” Tara discovered a new community called Oceanside. The fully-female bunch were not very friendly. They wanted to kill Tara in an effort to keep anybody from finding them and their massive supply of guns.
In helping Tara escape the community and their gunfire, Cyndieย made Tara “swear” not to tell her group about Oceanside.
Big mistake, Cyndie. You should’veย known Rick would need those guns!

Sing Me A Song
Sing Me A Song, The Walking Dead‘sย seventh episode of Season 7, saw one of the most iconic moments from its source material realized on television.
After hopping in the back of a Savior truck in Episode 7×05, Carl Grimes rode the bus into Savior-town in an effort to kill Negan. Instead, he took out a few grunts and found himself taken prisoner by Negan. He wasn’t treated like Daryl, though. Instead, he was shown round and introduced to the community.
Neganย did, however, have one bizarre and manipulative plan for the character. “Sing me a song,” Neganย demanded of Carl, as he stood by swinging Lucille around the same way he did while killing Carl’s friends.

Hearts Still Beating
Hearts Still Beating, Episode 7×08 of The Walking Dead, introduced a new group in the form of a mysterious cliffhangerย tease.
However, it also saw Aaron take quite a beating after he and Rick set out to raid a cache of guns in the middle of a lake. Upon arriving at Alexandria with their new weapons, the Saviors were already waiting for Rick. After finding the middle finger note, a Savior got angered toward Aaron and beat him senseless.
After the beating, Rick helped him up prior to Spencer’s gutting and Olivia’s shot to the face. Aaron looked to Rick and insisted his okay, saying his, “heart’s still beating.”

Rock in the Road
The Walking Dead Episode 7×09, the midseason 7 premiere, had a title which fit a large story.
In their journey to the Kingdom lead by Jesus of the Hilltop, Rick hoped to find a new ally in his war with Negan and the Saviors. King Ezekiel, however, wished to remained neutral in the war ahead (at the time, anyway).
In Rick’s efforts to convince the King to join his war, he told a story about a “rock in the road” which was ignored by many. However, when a girl did what she could to move that rock, she found gold beneath it as her hands bled from the effort which was simply to help prevent pain for others.ย
However, don’t forget the epic Rick-Michonne tag-team against a herd of zombies which saw over 300 sliced in half by a wire attaching two cars on separate highway lanes.

New Best Friends
Ending Episode 7×09, Rick was surrounded by a new group. The Walking Dead Episode 7×10 picked up where that left off. Rick saw his army and tried to bargain with Jadis and her people to join the war against Negan and the Saviors.ย
After accepting orders to retrieve a sufficient amount of guns to fight against Neganย and the Saviors, the rest of the group was not completely on board. More specifically, Rosita was against Rick’s plan and wanted to fight the Saviors immediately.
Speaking to Rosita, she questioned whether Jadisย and her people were their “new best friends.”
ย
Hostiles And Calamities
Episode 7×11 of The Walking Dead appeared to reveal Eugene’s new alliance. He is Negan.ย
After being questioned by the leader of the Saviors regarding his true value to the group, Eugene adapted to the situation and spewed the same lie he did with Abraham and Rosita years before. He insisted he was a scientist and is prepared to fight enemies of all kinds.
In his run-on lie, Eugene called some of the threats he encountered, “Hostiles and calamities.”
It’s a shame “I was gifted these pickles” was not the title of this one, though.
ย
Say Yes
The Walking Dead Episode 7×12 saw Rick returning to the form fans love to see, although the beard isn’t fully grown in just yet.ย
The character went on a run with his lady Michonne, taking part in lots of extracurricular activities in their search for guns. Upon finding a huge supply at an abandoned army base at a school, Rick and Michonneย gathered the weapons and brought them to Jadis and her people at the junkyard.
Jadis, however, insisted that 63 guns was not enough. Rick negotiated with her, saying his group will keep 20 guns and the cat he stole for Michonne, ending his demand with, “Say yes.”
ย
Bury Me Here
Episode 7×13 of The Walking Dead did not say its titular line audibly.
The Kingdom-centric episode followed Morgan, Carol, Ezekiel, Benjamin and Richard. Richard enacted a plan to anger the Saviors enough to kill him during their meeting but they elected to kill Benjamin instead. It was later, when Morgan was losing his mind over Benjamin’s death, that he discovered the grave dug by Richard next to his daughter’s backpack.
Above it, a piece of cardboard had “bury me here” written on it. They would end up doing just that, as Morgan finally broke his no-killing creed and served Benjamin justice by killing Richard.
ย
The Other Side
The Walking Dead Episode 7×14 falls under the same category as Episode 7×03. The title was not directly spoken but was, instead, the theme of the episode and a location where characters found themselves. Ironically enough, it lead to Sashaย finding her place in Daryl’s cell.
The Other Side followed Rosita and Sashaย as they went to the episode’s titular location by definition of the good guys. The characters set out to kill Neganย but Sashaย locked Rosita out at the last minute and rushed into the Sanctuary, guns blazing.ย
She found herself behind enemy lines, on the other side.
Of course, this episode also finally saw Maggie and Glenn discussing his guilt over Glenn’s death, which fans won’t soon forget.
ย
Something They Need
The penultimate episode of The Walking Dead‘s seventh season slightly altered it title when delivered as a line of dialogue.ย
Rick’s group head out for the Oceanside community after Tara broke her “swear” promise to Cyndieย as they needed their guns to take on Negan and gain Jadis’ army. After they managed to round up the entire community without actually harming anyone, Rick told the Oceanside community they have “something we need.”
Nataniaย quickly shut down Rick’s request for her group to join the war despite clearly showing chemistry as an army when they took out a herd of walkers. Still, Rick didn’t leave empty handed. The group is heavily armed heading into the finale.
The episode also explored Sasha’sย imprisonment at the Sanctuary.

The First Day Of The Rest Of Your Life
The Season 7 finale of The Walking Dead has a title which is delivered as a line of dialogue for Negan.
Trying to convert Sasha into a soldier for the Saviors, Neganย is showing an odd sort of respect for the character. In a finale episode scene, he delivers pancakes to Sashaย and tells her they are going to have a big day.
According to Negan, this is “the first day of the rest of your life,” for Sasha. It is a stark contrast from the title of the Season 7 premiere on October 23.
