The Walking Dead Season 7 has been the biggest in the show’s history. Multiple communities and characters have been introduced, all the while Rick Grimes has been oppressed and bullied like never before.

It’s easy to miss some of the hidden clues throughout some of the episodes, as a result.

The midseason 7 finale was loaded with teases of things to come on the AMC series and Easter Eggs within itself. On the following slides, we run through a couple of the hidden clues and moments you may have missed in The Walking Dead‘s midseason 7 finale.

Full spoilers are eligible going forward. You’ve been warned!

Maggie’s Rise

Several of these hidden clues stem from knowledge of Robert Kirkman’s The Walking Dead comics. Within that knowledge is the fact that Maggie emerges as the leader at the Hilltop community. The shift in Hilltop leadership was never more apparent than the subtle scene in the beginning of Episode 7×08.

As Gregory attempted to criticize Maggie, he stood by her post with an apple. After she asked about it, Eduardo insisted Gregory hand it over because she’s pregnant. The Hilltop community is already siding with Maggie in the aftermath of her dramatic tractor-to-the-rescue heroics in Episode 7×05.

The audience knows to expect Maggie as a leader while the characters only beginning to see the shades of her emergence.

Rick’s Rise

The theme for Season 7B is “rise up.” The tonal shift for this was presented in the closing moments of The Walking Dead midseason 7 finale.ย

Not only did Rick reunite with Maggie for the first time since the Season 7 premiere, he also gave Daryl a much needed hug after his imprisonment at Negan’s Sanctuary. Most importantly, he got his gun back.

The handing over of Rick’s python was symbolic of his position in relation to Negan. When Negan stripped Rick of his gun, he also stripped his power and persona. Rick can finally return to his leadership position and rally the communities against these bullies.

Dwight’s Room

Dwight’s room was filled with further teases of Daryl and Dwight’s mirroring. The characters hate each other for the things their respective groups have forced them to do to one another but, in reality, the show is painting them as not being so different from each other.ย

Dwight, who has been wearing Daryl’s vest for a few weeks now, was not around during Daryl’s escape from the Sanctuary. As Daryl raided Dwight’s room for clothes, he dressed as his nemesis but also saw a wooden carved chess piece on a table nearby.

The chess piece is a reference to the piece Daryl found in the early half of Season 6, prior to Dwight’s formal introduction as a member of the Saviors.

Dwight’s absense from the Sanctuary has also sparked suspicions of the character being the one creeping on Rick, Aaron and Alexandria in the midseason 7 finale.

Richard’s Weapon of Choice

To start the episode, we saw Carol and Morgan for the first time in six weeks. As their conversation wrapped up, the Kingdom’s Richard showed up with his hands full of glass bottles.

In The Walking Dead comics, Richard is seen using glass bottles as molotov cocktails to take out hordes of Saviors during the war while fighting as a soldier withย Alexandria, the Hilltop, and the Kingdom.

Richard’s request for help in the war is also a tease of what’s ahead, though Carol and Morgan’s refusal is a wild card. Both characters are already dead in The Walking Dead comics.

Hearts Still Beating

Every episode of the season has been a line of dialogue from the series. With the exception of the Season 7 premiere (“The day will come when you won’t be” was a line from Season 1), each episode has made its title known in the form of dialogue throughout the episode.

The finale was no exception.

After taking a beating from some Saviors, Rick’s buddy Aaron said everything was okay because his “heart’s still beating.”

Aaron heart beat is very much a reflection to that of Alexandria’s. They’ve taken a beating but their hearts are still beating. It’s time to rise up and fight!
