Prior to Travis' sudden and unexpected death in the second half of Fear the Walking Dead's Season 3 premiere, the series had some blurred lines as to which cast member was the lead. At times, it appeared Cliff Curtis was to be in charge. Other times made Dickens appear to be in front. There were even times when Nick Clark actor Frank Dillane could have made an argument for the lead actor title.
According to Fear the Walking Dead's executive producer Gale Anne Hurd and showrunner Dave Erickson, the torch is absolutely Dickens' to carry, going as far to say she is the equivalent of The Walking Dead's Rick Grimes for Fear the Walking Dead.
"The character of Madison is number one on the call sheet, and she is, as people would say, the Rick Grimes of this show," Hurd said.
"It's rare to see the woman's story provided. She's the one who is keeping the family alive, especially now that Travis (Cliff Curtis) is gone. She's going to have to earn that and maintain it."
Erickson chimed in, adding a bit of detail to the Rick Grimes comparsion.
"Rick was a cop, and Maddie was a guidance counselor, so there was an assurance that she would get up to the place where she could lead on all levels," Erickson said.
"And I think there mistakes that all of our characters made last season" Hurd added. "You know, they got flack for lighting up the RBH when she tried to find ... she don't do that no more."
"I'm more gangsta than Rick," Dickens said herself.
