It's no secret that The Walking Dead's season six finale left a large portion of the audience frustrated. Many fans, likely the more vocal of the audience, have taken to comment sections and other spaces of the Internet to talk about their feelings of betrayal and disappointment in not knowing who it was that Negan killed.

The Walking Dead's writer and creator Robert Kirkman has openly discussed the fan frustrations since the finale, which aired over a month ago, and he stands by it still. "We knew that people might be upset, but come on! Everybody wants to see what happened," Kirkman now tells RollingStone.

"That's what a cliffhanger is," the writer goes on. "I'll probably get crucified for this, but I feel like there's a culture of instant gratification now: Netflix, social media, everything is on demand at all times. Nothing is withheld. You can't do 52 episodes a year. It's just not feasibly possible. If you can do something that has people talking about your show in that gap between seasons, that's great."

Many fans conclude their comments with remarks about not coming back to the show when it returns this fall, but Kirkman hopes for everyone to come back and promises that if they do, they won't be disappointed. "We just ask that if you've enjoyed the show so far, just know, Season Seven is going to be pretty great," Kirkman says.

The Walking Dead will return for its seventh season in October. Expect the first trailer for the new episodes to spawn out of San Diego Comic Con in July.
