HBO Max is Officially Adding One of the Best Comedy Series of All Time

The world lost an icon last week with the passing of Catherine Oโ€™Hara at the age of 71. The legendary actor had an extensive career on both the big and small screen, giving audiences memorable characters both serious and hilarious for decades and becoming a part of our pop culture landscape thanks to her role as Kate McCallister in Home Alone. Now, however, one of her other truly iconic roles will be available to an even larger audience as HBO Max adds one of the best comedy series of all time to its streaming lineup.

Starting Saturday, February 7th, all six seasons of Schittโ€™s Creek will begin streaming on HBO Max. The series, which follows a video-store magnate and his actress wife as well as their two adult children when they are forced to move to a small town after losing their fortune, has been streaming on Hulu since May 2022 after it departed Netflix. The series will be continuing to stream on Hulu even with its addition to HBO Max, meaning all 80 episodes will be available on two platforms.

Catherine Oโ€™Haraโ€™s Moira Rose May Be One of Her Best Characters (And It Earned Her an Emmy)

Catherine O'Hara Schitts Creek

While Oโ€™Hara has a number of incredible roles fans can revisit to honor her memory, her role as soap-opera star Moira Rose may just be one of her very best and certainly one of her most popular and iconic. While Moira Rose was easily a character that could have been deeply unlikeable โ€” a high maintenance and even spoiled former star used to wealth and comfort being forced to โ€œslum itโ€ with regular folk in a small town after losing her wealth and status is something of a recipe for caricature. However, Oโ€™Hara made Moira not only likeable, but a character that was at times strangely relatable. She was loud and vain and extremely dramatic, but she was also unapologetically herself and Oโ€™Hara played it to perfection.

While Moira Rose is a character fully detached from reality in man respect, Oโ€™Hara gave the self-absorbed matriarch something of a campy humor. Even when Moira was at her most materialistic and vain, melting down over a misplaced wig or a lost handbag, or even struggling to connect with the โ€œcommonโ€ folk of Schittโ€™s Creek, Oโ€™Hara imbued a humanity in the character, giving one the sense that her heart was always in the right place, even if she didnโ€™t know exactly how to use it. Her Moira was equal parts difficult and awkward and watching the character evolve in even the smallest of ways felt a little revolutionary โ€” and made for excellent and hilarious television, too. Itโ€™s no surprise that the role won Oโ€™Hara an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 2020.

Of course, Schittโ€™s Creek is more than just Oโ€™Haraโ€™s incredible and layered performance as Moira Rose. The entire series is one of dynamic characters, awkward humor, and is just a genuinely great series overall. Itโ€™s a series that has made the impressive leap from being merely quality entertainment to a part of our cultural lexicon and is eminently meme-able (if youโ€™ve ever found yourself saying โ€œfold in the cheeseโ€ for something other than a recipe, Schittโ€™s Creek is why) and if you havenโ€™t seen it yet, itโ€™s arrival on HBO Max on February 7th is the perfect time to give it a watch.
