Top 3 Netflix Picks for Today Include a “Must-See Sci-Fi Gem” (And the Lead Plays 17 Characters)

In case you haven’t noticed, there are a LOT of streaming options available on Netflix. And with new additions coming every single week, the size of the streamer’s roster is only getting bigger. It can feel impossible to sift through the mess of the algorithm to find something great that you might actually want to watch. The goal of this column is to help with that, bringing you a couple of awesome streaming choices to add to your watchlist today, even if they weren’t previously on your radar.

For today, I’m going to focus on maybe the most underrated comedy series on all of Netflix, an incredible family animation from DreamWorks, and a killer sci-fi series that should be heralded as one of the best of the 2010s. Let’s start with that one, shall we?

Orphan Black (2013)

If you missed Orphan Black during its incredible five-season run, now is the time to jump on the wagon. Tatiana Maslany won an Emmy for her multiple roles in the series, where she was tasked with playing countless characters as part of a conspiracy plot involving clones. The BBC hit is full of twists and turns, and might surprise with just how emotional and earnest it can get.

CNET‘s Jennifer Bisset called Orphan Black a “must-see sci-fi gem,” and it definitely fits that bill. Despite all of its award nominations and accolades, Orphan Black still feels like it has flown under the radar for years. The show was added to Netflix this month, bringing it to the biggest audience it has ever experienced, thus creating an opportunity to exponentially grow the fan base.

Netflix currently has all five seasons streaming (50 episodes total), making for a pretty easy binge that will give you closure when all is said and done.

The Wild Robot (2024)

DreamWorks is currently dominating the Netflix movie charts, with three of the four Shrek films taking up spots on the streamer’s Top 10 list. I love Shrek as much as anybody, but sometimes you need something a little different, maybe more emotional, from your animated fare. That’s where The Wild Robot comes in, a movie that was instantly and almost universally regarded as one of the best films DreamWorks Animation has ever released.

From Lilo & Stitch and How to Train Your Dragon‘s Chris Sanders, The Wild Robot is a heartstring-tugger about an artificial being that takes to caring for a young bird in an unforgiving wilderness. It’s a story about found family that has a lot to teach young audiences, but is equally as enjoyable for the adults in the room.

Fair warning, there’s a near-zero percent chance you won’t cry at least once before the movie comes to an end.

Detroiters (2017)

Tim Robinson and Sam Richardson are one of the funniest duos in comedy. I was going to add more to that sentence but, now that I think about it, what else really needs to be said? From I Think You Should Leave to NFL schedule announcements to killing extraterrestrials for Totino’s Pizza Roles, these two are relentlessly funny every time they appear on-screen together.

Perhaps their best work as a pair, though, came in the short-lived and criminally underrated Comedy Central series Detroiters. Playing marketing executives (who are somehow both very good and completely terrible at their jobs), Robinson and Richardson spend 20 episodes doing nothing but playing off one another — and it’s comedy gold. It’s also worth noting that the humor is a little more accessible than things like ITYSL.

Had Detroiters arrived just a few years after it did, it would’ve run for at least five seasons. “Ahead of it’s time” doesn’t even do it justice, but at least we have 20 episodes of Tim & Sam goodness to enjoy.
