It looks like there’s a new mystery dominating Netflix just in time for Halloween. Set in the idyllic fictional Vermont town of Tall Pines, this limited series follows a local cop who is new to town, as well as two girls who have recently escaped from an academy for troubled teenagers as they attempt to uncover the dark secrets of Tall Pines.

Wayward dropped on September 25th and now holds the top spot on Netflix’s Global Top 10 Shows. In the town of Tall Pines, it seems like everyone is hiding something, their secrets starting to spill out into the open as police officer Alex Dempsey and his pregnant wife move to town. After meeting students Abbie and Leila, the pair recently having run away from Tall Pines Academy, Alex begins investigating a series of unusual incidents, leading him to Evelyn Ward, played by Toni Collette, the unnerving headmistress of the Tall Pines Academy, who seems to exert a sort of control over the entire town. While it has mixed reviews, with some calling it confusing or saying that it falls off after the first few episodes, it’s also been lauded as intriguing and thrilling, with characters and performances that draw the audience in.
Could We Be Getting A Second Season?

While Wayward, created by Mae Martin, who also stars in the series as Alex, was put forth as a limited series, it looks like it’s garnering enough viewership and attention that Netflix is considering giving fans a second season. In an interview with TVInsider, Martin said, “I was told it was a miniseries, but there’s definitely more story to tell, I think. We left all those characters in crisis, basically. Hopefully it’s tied up enough that it’s satisfying to watch as a series.” Toni Collete, who plays Evelyn Wade, said about the show and its possible future, “It’s endlessly intriguing. Endlessly. So many places it could go, for sure.”
“I was a wayward teen in the early 2000s, and my best friend was sent to one of these troubled teen institutes when she was 16,” Martin told Tudum. “She came back and had just the craziest stories about it.” So while the show isn’t entirely based on a true story, it does pull from a very dark reality surrounding teens who are deemed as troubled, and that is a story with the potential to continue being told, bringing more awareness to what is happening that inspires it.
