A group of Earpers -- Wynonna Earp fans -- recently got together for a GLAAD Spirit Day drive, which earned almost $13,000 to show visible support for LGBTQIA youth and stand against bullying.
The drive was organized by Bridget Liszewski, editor-in-chief of TV Junkies; and Bonnie Ferrar and Kevin Bachelder, who host the Tales of the Black Badge podcast, a show that examines the Wynonna Earp TV series.
"Wynonna Earp fans pride ourselves on using our collective 'polite no chill' for good,"Bachelder, Ferrar, and Liszewski told SYFY Wire in a statement. "A campaign against bullying seemed like an ideal candidate for that. Inclusivity and kindness are some of the core Earper values, and given that many Wynonna Earp fans are also a part of the LGBTQ community, we undertook this Spirit Day campaign hoping to raise a few dollars for a cause many could relate to."
The original goal was to earn just $1,500 -- but when fans and some of the creatives behind the show got on board, they made nearly ten times that.
The group offered a variety of prizes, and got a feather in their cap when the show's writers set a goal for $5,000 and promised that a season 3 character would be named after a randomly-selected donor if the campaign reached the goal.
Wynonna Earp has a passionate LGBTQIA following, thanks in part to the romance between Wynonna's sister Waverly and police officer Nicole Haught, which fans have dubbed "Wayhaught."
"I like the idea that the canon romance of the show isn't necessarily the lead, especially a lead that isn't necessarily defined by romance," showrunner Emily Andras told ComicBook.com over the summer. "I think Wynonna Earp certainly has romantic interests and desires, but she's not going to be an easy woman to pin down, to say the least."
"We are so thankful to be a part of a fandom that realizes the power of being kind, compassionate and generous. Earpers continually prove to be a bright spot and show how kindness is not only contagious, but it can make this world a better place," said the group's statement.
