With a surprise appearance at Showtime's presentation to the Television Critics Association, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. baddie Kyle MacLachlan confirmed that he will reprise his role as Agent Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks when it returns in 2016, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Here's how they put the short exchange, about the only concrete information about the upcoming third season of the cult classic:

"You look like you need damn fine cup of coffee," [MacLachlan] said, sauntering (in character) out onstage to join Showtime president David Nevins. The exec introduced MacLachlan, then saying, "He'll be leading the show, and there'll be more cast coming on as we roll through."

Nevins said that the plot was something Lynch had apparently been "toying with" for years, and that the twenty-fifth anniversary was a "magic number." During the original run of the series, an apparition that appeared to be murder victim Laura Palmer told Agent Cooper inside the dreamlike realm of the Black Lodge, "I'll see you again in 25 years."

The series ran for only two seasons but is widely regarded as one of the greatest shows ever on television. In the series finale, Cooper's body is seemingly possessed by BOB, the supernatural entity ultimately responsible for the murder of Laura Palmer and the series' central antagonist. It's unknown whether the planned third season will deal with that plot directly, though, as it's been implied that life in Twin Peaks has carried on with or without a TV show to watch it. Later this year, co-creator Mark Frost will write a book that serves as a guide to the town and may help establish some of the plot's premise ahead of its release next year.
