Doctor Strange Movie Described As Very Dark And Psychedelic

Get your purple sunglasses out, Marvelites, as Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange is going to get funky.

Doctor Strange's cinematographer Ben Davis revealed at a recent lecture that the upcoming film will embrace Doctor Strange's trippy comic book roots for a psychedelic romp that will journey through several dimensions.

"It has a very psychedelic grounding, and it's not your typical Marvel action movie," Davis said. "Most of the work within it is about other dimensions. And I described it, I think, when I was talking to Marvel as Marvel's Fantasia, in a way, because it's so sort of out there and different to everything else that they've done."

Davis also discussed how Doctor Strange is influenced by 20th Century artist M.C. Escher, who is known for his mind-melting works that explore the realms of infinity.

"It's all very out there," he said. "I can't really say much more about it, I'm afraid. But I think it'll be really interesting, and it's a very dark movie, I'm pleased to say."

That sounds an awful lot like the classic Doctor Strange comics of the sixties and seventies, whose cosmic adventures are often described as psychedelic and surreal.

Directed by Scott Derrickson and starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Doctor Strange journeys into theaters on November 4, 2016.
