Super Violent Castlevania Animated Series In The Works By Producer Adi Shankar

Adi Shankar (Dredd, Power/Rangers) has revealed that he is working on adapting Konami's Castlevania video game series into a "hard-hitting anime" style animated series.

Shankar broke the news himself on Facebook, announced that he is working with Fred Seibert and Kevin Klonde on the "super violent min-series" that will "flip the vampire sub-genre on its head."

According to Collider, the series is at independent animation studio Frederator, whose past credits include Adventure Time and The Fairly OddParents.

Shankar also revealed the the miniseries' plot will be based specifically on Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse. The 1990 NES game's story, set in 1476, saw the previously exiled Belmont family of vampire hunters called back into action by the church to stop Count Dracula and his army of monsters from ravaging Europe. Trevor Belmont, that era's wielder of the Vampire Killer Whip, steps up to the challenge, and is joined by three new (and playable) allies: young sorceress Sypha Belnades, pirate Grant Danasty, and Dracula's dhampir son Alucard (future protagonist of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night).

Shankar says he's drawing inspiration from classic anime like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Ninja Scroll, as well as fan favorite Western series Young Justice. We'll have to wait and see if the series can live up to inspirations and lofty ambitions.
