Jason Momoa Using The New 52 As Research For Aquaman

Actor Jason Momoa is reading recent Aquaman comics as research for his upcoming role in the DC Cinematic Universe. The actor, who will portray the King of Atlantis in the upcoming Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice movie, name dropped Geoff Johns when discussing his upcoming Aquaman solo movie, which is due to hit theatres in 2018.

During a panel at Dallas Comic Con, Momoa mentioned that he had read Johns' Aquaman run to help him prepare for the role. "So, there's not really a lot of spoilers I can give away," Momoa told the panel. "But the research I've done on the New 52 stuff with Geoff Johns, and just researching who he is, he's amazing." Momoa also cited Aquaman's strength and toughness as reasons why he's looking forward to playing the underwater superhero. He also mentioned that WB/DC had a "big beautiful map" for the DC Cinematic Universe that he wished he could share with fans.

Johns' run on Aquaman not only re-established the King of Atlantis as one of DC's biggest superheroes, it also expanded on the character's mythology by introducing the Seven Relics of Atlantis, ancient artifacts with extraworldly powers. Aquaman's trident was one of the seven relics and members of a secret superhero team called "The Others" wielded the other weapons.

Although he mentioned Johns' run as a possible direction for the movie, Momoa warned fans that his version of Aquaman would feature "new things" that fans should consider with an open mind. However, he didn't elaborate on what those "new things" might be, so we may have to wait closer to Aquaman's 2018 release for more news.
