Sherlock fans have been waiting a long time for a new season to arrive. Sherlock: The Abominable Bride may have helped feed that craving, but they’ll be waiting a while longer before Sherlock Season 4 arrives.
At the 2016 TCA winter press tour, PBS president Paula Kreger revealed plans for Sherlock’s return.
“We do have the next Sherlock announced, that is coming up about a year from now,” Kerger tells Zap2it.
That means, despite Sherlock resuming production in April, the new season won’t air on PBS until 2017.
“As you know, Benedict has gotten to be somewhat popular since we began our work with him,” Kreger continues, “and he very much wants to continue with Sherlock. As you know, they are produced almost like films, and we’re hoping the next one will be about a year from now.”
Sherlock (and Downton Abbey) fans know that there is sometimes a gap between when these series premiere in the United Kingdom and when they air on Masterpiece on PBS, so it’s unclear if Kreger is referring to when the new season will premiere or when it will be shown on this side of the Atlantic.
Cumberbatch is currently busy filming Marvel’s Doctor Strange, hitting theaters in November.
