I think we're at a point where it's safe to say that Spider-Man has earned his place with the other heroes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Long thought to be impossible, Spidey joined his fellow heroes in the MCU in the summer blockbuster, Captain America: Civil War. Acting as a supporting character working with Tony Stark to take down the "Anti-Registration heroes" led by Steve Rogers, Spidey has been introduced as an inexperienced high schooler with all the charm and sarcastic wit from the comics. Following his initial splash, Peter Parker will once again be getting his own film in 2017's "Spider-Man: Homecoming". With Tom Holland as the titular web slinger, numerous actors and actresses have been added as Spidey's supporting cast, potentially leading to the idea that it's taking its cues from the Spectacular Spider-Man animated series, according to Comicbook.com fan, J. Hansen.

To start, for those who hadn't seen the Spectacular Spider-Man animated series, it documented the story of Peter Parker in high school and had a fantastic run from 2008-2009. So well received was the series that it's been claimed by many fans to be the best interpretation of Spidey ever, even including the comics! With the arrival of this familiar yet new interpretation of Peter Parker came an eclectic cast of supporting characters, some old and some new. The recent casting news of actors and actresses such as Zendaya and Tony Revolori point to fashioning the movie's high schoolers similar to how they were established in the animated series. While this could also point toward taking a cue from Ultimate Spider-Man, the mix of, and size of, the cast points toward Spectacular more so than the Ultimate comic and cartoon.

Another big indicator is the rumored villain being the Vulture for Spidey's first solo MCU foray. The Vulture is seemingly going to be the first big villain Spider-Man butts heads with in Homecoming, and lo and behold, the Vulture was the first villain Peter Parker fought in the Spectacular Spider-Man cartoon. Adrian Toomes acted as something of a bridge to not only introduce the idea of super powered villains to Spidey's world, but also introduced Oscorp and Norman Osborn to Parker's life as well. Homecoming could easily take inspiration from the Spectacular series in introducing Toomes along with Oscorp as a big catalyst in Peter's life.

Tom Holland's Peter Parker has also only been Spider-Man for around six months, which is about how long Parker had been Spidey in the Spectacular series. Spectacular Spider-Man presented us with an inexperienced Webhead, still juggling relationships, high school drama, and super powers which is the direction that, for all intents and purposes, Homecoming seems to be pointed toward. While there's little to no chance that we'll see a return of the Spectacular Spider-Man animated series, it's stories and characters could certainly be leveraged in the MCU moving forward. We'll have to wait until next year to see how much Homecoming was influenced by the series overall if any.
