Doctor Strange promises to be one of the most unique Marvel Studios films to date. It will bring elements and powers to the Marvel Cinematic Universe audiences have not even dreamed about yet but it will also bring one more very important thing: new dimensions.

Speaking to ComicBook.com exclusively at San Diego Comic Con on Friday, Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson promised some brave new worlds ahead starting with the November film.

"I think that the short answer is this is the movie where Marvel goes full weird," Derrickson says. "That full weirdness is written in the Ditko images, the Jack Kirby images, the early Doctor Strange comic book panels that are still to this day so mind blowing."

"What the comics did was, they brought with Doctor Strange an extra dimension into psychadelia, mysticism, and spirituality and all these very 60's things and broke open the Marvel comic book universe into the Marvel multiverse," the director adds. "I think Doctor Strange is going to be the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Multiverse. It's really serving the same function that the comic did. Even though it was a weird aberration as a comic book, I think it was a real linchpin in the comics. It ended up being decades of new stories and I think this movie will do the same thing."

One of the most anticipated films of Marvel's new slate, Doctor Strange has already been teased in previous movies (notably Captain America: The Winter Soldier), and marks the introduction of magic as a major force in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (its use by Scarlet Witch being comparably minor, and Thor's related magic being specifically explained as high-level science).

Doctor Strange follows the story of neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a horrific car accident, discovers the hidden world of magic and alternate dimensions.

Derrickson is directing with a cast that includes Cumberbatch as Dr. Stephen Strange, Tilda Swinton as The Ancient One, Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer, a.k.a. Night Nurse, Benedict Wong as Wong and Mads Mikkelsen will play an unspecified villain role.

Marvel's Doctor Strange will cast a spell on audiences November 4, 2016.
