The Pokemon: Sun and Moon anime series debuted today in Japan, coinciding with tomorrow's release of the new Pokemon game. In the new series, Ash and his mother travel to the Alola region (Ash's mother and her Mr. Mime won a contest) and Ash quickly encounters the Guardian Pokemon Tapu Koko, who gives him a Z-Ring to use in battle. Tapu Koko shows Ash how to use the Z-Ring, which allows Pikachu to use the powerful Gigavolt Havoc Z-Move.

You can watch Pikachu unleash this powerful attack in the gif below:

As for the rest of anime....well, Pokemon fans should be pleasantly surprised. Although the new series uses more visual humor than Pokemon: XY The Series (probably due to the popularity of Yokai Watch, which has tons of slapstick humor), Ash and Pikachu are still portrayed as a competent Pokemon team. Not only is Pikachu still as uber-powerful as before, he even caused Ash's Z-Crystal to shatter because of how much power he unleashed with his Gigavolt Havoc attack.

From the looks of the anime's opening credits, it looks like Ash will have a pretty full Pokemon team in the anime. In addition to the already confirmed Rowlet, it also looks like Ash will catch a Litten, a Rockruff, and a Grubbin in the coming weeks. Ash will also have his RotomDex as a second companion.

European fans will get an early look at Pokemon Sun and Moon this weekend, but no premiere date has been announced for the US. You can check out a new trailer of Pokemon Sun and Moon above!
