Avengers 2

Well, The Avengers hasn't even made it to theaters yet, and already director Joss Whedon is talking sequel. Buzz is so positive for the Avengers, it appears to be a foregone conclusion that it's going to be a monster of a hit. Surprisingly, Joss Whedon seems to be suggesting that a second Avengers movie would be done on a smaller scale. In an interview with SFX (via Digital Spy), Joss Whedon indicated that an Avengers sequel would need to be "smaller" and "more personal." While that might sound odd given that sequels are usually hyped as bigger and better, Joss Whedon has some pretty sound reasoning for his comments. Whedon wants to avoid a sequel being just a redo of the first movie. The first Avengers movie is featuring an epic confrontation between The Avengers and Loki in his mysterious army. To  make the sequel completely different, Whedon seems to be aiming to make it, "More personal, more painful." Whedon wants "a theme that is completely fresh and organic to itself." Another interesting comment made by Whedon is that he compared an Avengers 2 movie to being like The Godfather II. Whedon describes it as "by having flashbacks to young Michael Andolini escaping Sicily to come to New York, where he will be called Corleone." Whedon feels that sequels are better when that happens, and we would tend to agree. The big question would be if Marvel Studios will go for it. Often when movies rake in hundreds of millions of dollars, then production studios tend to push to stay with what worked. That's why the Hangover Part II was virtually the same move as the original Hangover just in a different location. The Avengers movie is scheduled to be released in theaters on May 4, 2012. When an Avengers sequel hits would be anyone's guess. However, if we were to bet on it, then we would think 2015 might be the most likely year for Avengers 2 to debut.
