Directing an ensemble movie can't be easy.  It really has to be hard when you're talking about actors that have to play both a person and a superhero persona.  Or something deeper, like Hulk.  SFX Magazine sat down with Joss Whedon, the director of "The Avengers" to talk about the film.  In the preview to the issue, Whedon talks about the difficulty with a character like Hulk/Bruce Banner. On what he had to get right with Hulk in this film, seeing that it's the 3rd movie (and 3rd actor) for the character: "So much. A Bruce Banner who's not obsessed with his own problems. A Hulk who not only feels flesh and blood, but is clearly an extension of Banner himself and not just a CGI thing that roars. A Hulk who feels dangerous, who might actually hurt someone we care about, who belongs in a classic horror film. And much more. He's the hardest character by far, and ended up being the most fun." I couldn't agree more with Joss.  And he should know how to direct an actor for Hulk.  Heck, the guy dealt with situations like that routinely with 'Buffy the Vampire Slayer' on TV.  The problem, however, is that unless you have some super talented CGI staff, it's difficult--or near impossible--to really bring out the emotions that Whedon is talking about.  It's one thing for an actor (in this case, Mark Ruffalo) to show a range of emotions as a human.  It's another to have a CGI version pull it off. But judging by the Ruffalo Hulk image in this article, Whedon, Ruffalo and crew might have just pulled it off.  We'll see come May.
