Guardians of the Galaxy to Focus on the Humanoid Characters

Guardians of the Galaxy concept artThe James Gunn-directed feature film adaptation of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy will heavily feature Star-Lord, Drax and Gamora, if nothing changes from the current draft, according to a source at Latino Review.

This leaves the non-humanoid characters, namely Rocket Raccoon and Groot the tree-man, in a bit of a lurch for camera time.

According to the story:

“These three characters are getting visual and backstory updates to meld them into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and going off the plot we already know ( “a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.”), it’s easy to see how Star-Lord, Peter Quill, will hijack his way into space and meet up with the roving future Guardians.”

The article notes that both Drax and Gamora have direct connections to Thanos, the presumed villain of the movie, who appeared briefly during the closing credits for The Avengers. In the comics, Gamora is adopted by Thanos while Drax is essentially a Thanos-killing machine.

The film is reportedly based on the Dan Abnett-Andy Lanning interpretations of the characters, who dealt with the aftermath of Thanos’s death in Annihilation and the impact it had on the characters in their run on Guardians of the Galaxy. In that story, Thanos is brought back to life by an intergalactic cult…probably not something we’ll see in the first Guardians film, but certainly a possibility either for a potential sequel down the line.

That said, it could be possible to see those types of events in flashback, setting the stage for Thanos to become the personification of death and removing that prickly “I’m in love with death as an actual physical person” motivation, replacing it with the idea that killing people directly benefits him.
