had a pretty decent sized cast. As a film centered on S.H.I.E.L.D., it makes sense that other agents working for the organization – like Nick Fury, Black Widow, Maria Hill and Agent 13 – would be big parts of the film, but one agent got left out. Where was Hawkeye? Speaking to CinemaBlend, Captain America: The Winter Soldier writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeeley said they tried to fit Clint Barton into the film, but ultimately decided they just didn't have room to do the character justice. "We knew we wanted Falcon there, we knew we wanted [Black Widow]," McFeeley said. "You're introducing Winter Soldier. Fury's got a bigger part in this one. It just started to seem like he was going to kind of get a crappy part." "If we were going to use him, we really wanted to use him well," Markus added. The writers said they planned to explain his absence by saying he was busy elsewhere, though the line didn't make it into the film. "We toyed around with, and maybe even shot a line or at least in a draft there's a line where we explained he's off somewhere doing something else," McFeeley said. Hawkeye, played by Jeremy Renner, seems to be getting the short end of the stick in these Marvel films. He appeared in Thor, but didn't get to fire even a single arrow. He was in The Avengers, but spent most of the movie mind controlled by Loki because, as director Joss Whedon has explained in interviews and commentary, there wasn't anything for him to do on the Avengers side of things. Now, he was apparently planned, at least in early drafts, to appear in Captain America: The Winter Soldier but was ultimately cut out completely without as much as a word of on screen explanation. Don't feel too bad for the archer though. He'll be back in Avengers: Age of Ultron and both Robert Downey, Jr. and Kevin Feige have hinted that he has a major role to play in that film. Maybe the mission he was busy with during Captain America: The Winter Soldier will even factor into the plot of the Avengers sequel. Either way, it seems like Hawkeye might finally get his time to shine. Captain America: The Winter Soldier is currently in theaters. Avengers: Age of Ultron comes to theaters on May 1, 2015.
